Forum: The future of our region’s non-urban land

Date:
26 Aug 2017 - 8:45am to 1:00pm

Population growth is a driver for land use change in our region, with pressure from multiple uses all vying for a piece of land, a finite resource. The need for housing and consequent expansion of the cities, towns and villages will continue for the foreseeable future, so it is necessary to consider planning options for peri-urban areas.

The NSW Government’s 2017 South-East Regional Strategic Plan lacks clear guidance for decision making by local governments on the best use of land for sustainable growth.

The extent of Canberra’s future metropolitan expansion is not defined in the ACT Planning Strategy and its timeframe to 2030 is only a decade away. The ACT also has no agreed set of measurable indicators in place to guide land-use decisions for a sustainable future. The sustainability of where and how we live is important, particularly for future generations.

The changing climate means business-as-usual is not a rational or sustainable pathway into the future. People are very good at adapting, and for communities to survive and thrive under the impacts of climate change, we need to transition to new lifestyle choices.

But wildlife and natural systems may not be able to adapt fast enough. Therefore, to protect what we value and to get what we need from peri-urban areas, planning decisions need to take account of the impacts of climate change.

The intended outcome of the Forum is a shared and enhanced understanding by participants of the following:

  • What are the land use choices available for areas surrounding our city
  • What ‘products’ from these land uses are needed for our region’s sustainable future.
  • What land use requirements or trade-offs need to be factored in planning decisions.

The proposed output of the forum is a short report, to be completed by the end of 2017, that summarises the deliberations. It will be provided to all participants and the relevant government agencies of the ACT and NSW South East region.
